The Danish warriors of the pre medieval period were feared across Europe. This weapon was one of the large two handed axes they wielded in their conquest of large swaths of the Anglo-Saxon England and the continent. Its shape is distinctly designed to align the cutting edge to strike centered on a human shaped target.
Throughout the 8th, 9th and 10th century this type of axe was one of the heavy weapons of its day. This large combat axe has a thin head to keep the weight to a minimum for speed and agility in the fight. It would deliver devastating blows as evidenced by the finds from Wisby.
Due to the wide travels of the Norse the use of the Dane Axe can be documented from Ireland in the west to Constantinople in the east. A truly significant weapon in the history of Europe.
