This large longsword is of a type often depicted in the hand of avenging angels in medieval art. It has a classic wheel pommel and straight guard in steel. The grip is a mottled dark red leather. The sword feels great in one hand for this large a sword and one would only need a pair of wings and a white horse to complete the look.
Art of the period often heroically shows armed saints with such swords and this can be a valuable tool used for dating sword development, as we discussed in our blog post about St. Martin.
