The Type XVIIIa longsword of the 15th century was an exceptionally efficient tool for the fighting man of the day. It incorporated a strong blade for the aggressive fighting depicted in combat traditions such as Fiore and Lichtenauer. A sword of this type needed to be dynamic not only in the half sword and winding actions of these styles but have a sharp edge excellent at cutting. This particular sword brings all these elements together into a very well rounded weapon. The broad blade has a tapering diamond cross-section that gracefully curves to the point in the lower portion of the blade.
The intensity of combat such as the Battle of Towton would have been the test of such a sword as this. The dynastic struggles of the War of the Roses saw several brutal battles where swords of this type would have encountered armored and unarmored opponents carrying a wide variety of weaponry. A soldier of this period would choose a blade that could meet all these challenges well.
This wheel pommeled longsword has steel components and a hardwood grip covered with leather. The blade is 6150 steel tempered to a 50 Rc hardness.
The sword moves quickly in the hands and we have seen several of our customers do quite well in cutting practice and competitions with this piece.
