The scallop shell motif is a design element seen in the art and architecture of Europe from the ancient age to today. Scallop shells were a typical motif in Greek and Roman art, the shell being a symbol of the Roman goddess Venus. In Medieval and Renaissance Europe the scallop shell survived as the single most recognized identifying mark of the pilgrims with Santiago as a destination, in their trek across Europe.

This fascination with the shape is carried through in this reproduction of an original hanger in The Wallace Collection, London. The 19 steel parts are taken to a bright finish and mounted on heavy black leather. This gives nice contrast with the steel parts and great durability. In the period the straps and body of the hangers were often made with exceptionally elaborate embroidery, some looking like three-dimensional sculpture.
