A nice example of a single handed sword from the 12th Century. A type that would have been used by knights and men at arms of the period as a personal weapon and in war. The hilt has a short straight guard of square cross section that chamfers into a hexagonal cross section at the ends. The pommel is a tea cozy shape that is the late form of the triangular shaped pommels of northern Europe in the viking and early medieval period. The blade is a type Xa shape with strongly defined fuller.
This style of sword was seen across Europe in this period. It would have been seen in the armies of Henry II and Louis VII of France as well as the 2nd and 3rd Crusades. The 12th century saw many conflicts and armored combatants would have looked to swords like this to be their main weapon.
