This is a wonderful replica of a famous 15th century riding sword from Germany. The term "riding sword" designates a sword that was worn as a personal sidearm on a daily basis.
The design of twisted branches, called the gothic bough style, was a popular motif for swords in the north central regions of Europe. The grip is hand-carved hardwood with a gloss finish. The mid-grip filet has a roped detail and a lower bezel binds the grip. The furniture is bronze, finished to a soft smooth surface. A sharply tapering, stiff blade ideal for the thrust, gives this sword a solid feel in the hand. This is an excellent example of the light and quick style of longsword so many knights chose for their personal weapon.
This sword is an upgraded version of the sword that we have offered in the past. The furniture has been resized and completely redone. The blade is longer and wider with an adjusted shape and distal taper. The published measurements on this sword differ across various sources. Our original replica was done to the measurements that were later found to be incorrect. This item now replicates the dimensions of the original sword in the Royal Armouries, Leeds.
