This sword is based on a 10th century original dredged from the Thames River at Shifford. The shape of the pommel and crossguard are faithfully reproduced, as is the characteristic short grip. Vikings, Anglo-Saxons and Danes all would have used swords of this form in the tumultuous 10th Century in England.
The fullered blade of this sword is an Oakeshott Type X. This type of blade is light enough for the quick wrist movements needed for the athletic style of combat practiced by the Vikings. The fullered blade is an innovation for reinforcement of the cutting edge while adding minimal weight.
Gripping the Nordic swords has been a topic of much discussion over the last several decades. Many people today find the feel of authentic grips of this type strange to handle at first.
