The first hand and a half sword was when a warrior put both of his hands on the sword to use the advantages in leverage and strength created by this position. The medieval knights would eventually adapt the single handed sword for this style of combat specifically by extending the grip and in some cases the blade. These early "bastard swords" or longswords where able to be used in one hand or two but they shined when held in two hands. The advantages in hand to hand combat were quickly adopted across Europe creating the schools of fence we study today.
This example has a simple straight guard a slightly waisted grip and a octagonal faceted pommel. The grip is covered in black leather and long enough for both hands to have a grip.
